What Feed to Use?
What Feed to Use?
We are regularly asked what type of feed we use with our animals. When we first started down the road of keeping animals, our main goal was to set out to find something that would be dairy and soy free. Our family and some of our close friends suffer from food allergies that include gluten, dairy, and soy. If you suffer from food allergies, you know the pain that we go through trying to find alternatives to readily available products in the store. This is when we decided to start keeping chickens so that we could monitor their intake, and have pasture raised eggs and meat that were soy and dairy free.
Unfortunately, the road ahead of us was not that easy. If you go to any of the local chains of feed supplies everything contained some variant of soy, dairy or gluten. So the search extended online to find products that might suit the needs of our family.
We eventually isolated a few brands of feed, but the one that stood out to us the most was New Country Organics. They have a variety of animal feeds for chickens, rabbits, goats, and other livestock; all of which are organic and met the standards that we were looking to maintain on our farm. What was even better is we found another small business that was selling New Country Organics locally, The Fancy Chicken Company. They too were looking to maintain the same standard of care for their animals as we were. They carry feed, bedding, and other things needed to keep chickens, rabbits, and other farm animals healthy and happy. They carry other brands of chicken feed and such as well, all high end, healthy feed, only the best!
You can find cheaper feeds, and we tried some. The difference was astonishing! Not only did we notice a difference in the quality of the feed, but other chicken owners noticed a difference in the health of our chickens. We have received many compliments on how full and healthy they look compared to the chickens they raise. This is what has sealed the deal for our little farm! We love our animals, and we want to keep them as healthy as possible. They are helping provide food for us, even more of a reason to make sure what’s going in is the best! We won’t be settling for anything less again.
(NCO Layer Chicken Feed)
Not only do we use the chicken feed from NCO, but we also use the rabbit feed. It too has been wonderful in comparison to other products that we have seen and used on the market. According to their website the rabbit feed contains "vitamins, minerals, and probiotics" and are a great supplement to the dry hay such as timothy or orchard grass we are feeding our rabbits. Surprisingly there are a lot of treats and feeds on the shelves in big stores that are really not good for your rabbits at all. They use things like ‘molasses’ and other ‘sugars’ which are really bad for your rabbits gut and digestion. Sometimes these will keep the rabbit eating more and more, resulting in them not wanting to eat their hay, which is the most important part of their diet and should make up 80% of it. This can result in gut issues, problems being overweight, and sometimes GI Stasis, which can be very dangerous for your rabbit.
